How to tell which convertible car seats are safest?
My 7 month old has nearly outgrown her infant seat. I’m looking at convertible seats for her, and I’m considering the Safety 1st Complete Air seat because of its new side-impact safety feature. How can I tell which seats have the best safety ratings? What should I look for? Is there a website that compares them? My only resources so far have been personal preference and parent reviews of different seats.

Hi! Good question! The safest seat is the seat that fits your child, fits your car, and that you can use correctly every time.
The Safety 1st Complete is a nice seat – and I love that it goes to 40lbs, but it’s not the "safest" – it’s just another option to consider.
What I would do is go to http://www.car-seat.org and look around… everyone has lots of experience installing all the seats on the market (its a bunch of carseat techs and other carseat enthusiast)
Also – the "Safest" thing for you to do for her is keep her rear facing well into her second year – a child would be "safer" rear facing in a $40 basic carseat then forward facing at 1 in the most expensive seat. That is a fact. Here’s some info on rear facing:

I’m not sure that there is a website that will compare them for you, but I really like Britax car seats. A lot of them come with side impact protection. This means it distributes crash forces, shields from vehicle intrusion, and contains the head and body.
A great website to look and compare a lot of car seats is findmycarseat.com. It’s a website that’s all about car seats, that’s where I got mine (Britax Marathon).
Hope this helps!! Good luck!
Britax is better–notice in that youtube link every single seat (except one) shown in the video rear facing is a Britax seat. That just goes to show you that they are the safest seats out there. Many seats come with SIP throughout the entire seat, not just in the head rest like the Safety 1st one has.
